The Creation of the Bidjara Logo
So when I decided it was time to ask for my artistic name, it was only natural that I sought out my grandfather, Senior Bidjara Elder. After discussions and letting him know what it was I wanted to do, he allowed me to use his clan name Bidjara and his family totem the possum and I could think of no better signature.
I sat and drew possums for ages. When I drew this one I loved it instantly. Hence why I use it as representation of Bidjara Design.
An expression of strength (name) and watchful (possum). Something I hope to achieve. I use this as my signature in all my works.
I do all forms of art and in all my art I always link it back to this design via – handpainting it on the back of my canvas pieces; doing this also on the underside of all my ceramic pieces; all photography that I do I print this symbol stamped on the lower corner of the matting of the work; all screenprints have this symbol printed on them.
Being indigenous and the passing of my Grandfather, thus mine, ideals, morals and culture is embedded in this symbol. It is a living representation of the clan Bidjara, Senior Elder – My Grandfather and my paint name. It represents the central core of me.
Given the current state of other people taking another persons art as there own, by having this symbol on each piece in an inconspicuous place, ensures that the buyer is receiving exactly what he/she paid for. Bidjara Design art.
I promote myself, my art, my culture with this design
